How to Become a Freemason: A Step-by-Step Guide

Freemasonry has welcomed good men for more than three centuries — but a lodge will never ask you to join. Here is exactly how a man becomes a Mason, from the first question to the day he is raised a Master Mason.

Freemasonry is the oldest and largest fraternity in the world, and for more than three hundred years it has welcomed good men who wish to better themselves and their communities. Yet unlike almost any other organization, a Masonic lodge will never ask you to join. The fraternity does not recruit. A man must come of his own free will and accord — which means the first step is always yours to take. Here is how that journey unfolds at League City Lodge No. 1053.

First, the qualifications.

Freemasonry asks little, but what it asks matters. To petition a Texas lodge, a man must be at least 18 years of age, believe in a Supreme Being, and be of good moral character and sound reputation. We welcome men of every faith, race, and background; Masonry is not a religion and never asks a man to set aside his own beliefs. What unites us is a shared desire to live honorably and to help others do the same.

Step one: ask.

Masons often share a simple phrase — “2B1ASK1,” meaning “to be one, ask one.” Because we do not solicit members, the brethren of the lodge are waiting for you to make the first move. If you know a Mason, tell him you are interested. If you do not, simply reach out to us directly. There is no pressure and no obligation — only an open door and honest answers to your questions.

Step two: get to know the lodge.

Membership begins with friendship. You will be invited to visit, to share a meal with the brethren, and to learn who we are and what we do. This is your chance to ask anything and to decide whether Freemasonry is right for you. Take your time; there is no hurry. Many men visit more than once before they petition.

Step three: petition the lodge.

When you are ready, you will complete a petition for membership. It must be signed by current members who can vouch for your character, so getting to know the lodge comes first. The petition is accompanied by a modest fee and, once submitted, is read aloud in a stated meeting of the lodge.

Step four: investigation and ballot.

A small committee of members will meet with you — and often your family — to talk further and answer any remaining questions. Their report is shared with the lodge, and the members then vote by secret ballot. Freemasonry has always guarded its character carefully, and a man is admitted by the agreement of the brethren.

Step five: the three degrees.

Once accepted, you will be initiated and advance through the three degrees of Masonry — Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason. Each degree is a ceremony rich with symbolism drawn from the craft of the ancient stonemasons, and each teaches lessons in morality, duty, and brotherly love. You progress at your own pace as you study and grow.

The journey does not end there.

Becoming a Master Mason is not the finish line — it is the beginning. A lodge is a lifelong community of friends and mentors, and the lessons of Masonry are meant to be lived, not merely learned. Most Masons will tell you the fraternity gave them far more than they ever expected to receive.

If you are a good man of any faith who wishes to be part of something older and greater than himself, we would be honored to hear from you. Reach out through our contact page with any question at all — there is never any obligation, and the first step is always yours to take.
